There's a unique sense of savoring each moment of the holiday season. Gathering around the table for food and drink is one of its most important features. When setting the table throughout these weeks, each item is thoughtfully chosen to support an atmosphere of warmth and communion.

We light candles, bring out beautiful vases, and rediscover old holiday decorations. It’s all about bringing out the large serving dishes and textile napkins—setting things up thoughtfully, giving each item space and attention.

“There’s something naturally fitting about deep, rich tones for the season, but a clear blue or light green can add a delightful contrast. That unexpected pop of color creates a graphic effect and brings a burst of energy into the mix”, Lamai points out. 

Generous gatherings 
“My mother collected cookie molds over many years, from her time running a cooking school, and each December, our whole family would gather on the first weekend to bake together in a big space. Growing up, I remember the excitement of visitors arriving and all the preparations”, tells Lamai. 

That warm-up to the holidays is one of her most-beloved memories—Christmas Eve itself passes quickly, but the scents and tastes of the cookies linger throughout December. Today, she invites her best friend and their children to participate, dedicating a day to baking. It's a way to make the moment last a bit longer. 

The Mere Bowl feels like a true holiday indulgence: an elegant centerpiece designed to elevate anything it holds. Its presence adds a sense of occasion. Whether left empty to let its distinctive form shine or filled with seasonal treats, it’s a gift that’s universal yet unique, perfect for those who appreciate the art of a thoughtfully set table.

She notes that a simple touch can be adding a small marker or different color ribbon to each glass so everyone knows which is theirs, just like when we were children. These little details are also wonderful to include the children in, creating name cards or folding napkins as part of the anticipation of what is to come. They help us tune into the moment.

Bold, even edible arrangements 

There’s something special about letting a holiday arrangement be full and bold, thereby creating a graphic, sculptural bouquet. Lamai recommends including something edible—fragrant herbs, for instance—engages all the senses and allows for a sense of volume and presence. Decorative branches of kale with touches of orange marigolds. 

Large branches in a floor vase like Ridge Vase in glass can be as captivating as a traditional Christmas tree yet feel less dominant or overwhelming, offering a fresh take on holiday greenery. The combination of delicate glass objects with simple elements, like a green ribbon, adds a relaxed charm. 

Why not add something the family is excited about at the moment, like paper decorations from preschool? That way there is something for everyone.
“The pieces I bring out today are a mix of new items and cherished heirlooms”, says Lamai. Each piece creates a blend of past and present, looking both back and forward.
It’s about balancing playful, almost naive shapes with pieces that carry a sense of meaning and history.
